The pilot's eyes are, from left to right, top to bottom: Amelia Earhart, Gladys O'Donnell, Bobbi Trout, Jean LaRene, Ruth Elder, Florence Pancho, and Barnes. The registration numbers are of the airplanes they flew in various races and endurance events in the 1920's and 30's. The artist browsed old books and magazines, and yellowed newspapers, on the subject of female pilots. Despite their many heroic accomplishments during the Golden Age of Flight, what moved the artist most were their eyes. Looking up at him from faded pages were their eyes. We have seen these eyes before, seen them on people of accomplishment; on those who have been places others have not; who have faced and met challenges when chance was not a friend. We have seen them looking back at us from mirrors, after we have endured and succeeded, and the damp is still on our backs.
