A stunning abstract redwood sculpture with a prolific upward attitude projecting vigorous energy and strength. Resembling an abstract human or possibly a robotic form, the sculpture twists and turns erratically as its apex points sharply upward, focusing on the sky above. An intermittent series of striking organic appendages add surprising contrasts to the smoothly polished architectural components which shift dramatically back and forth as they cut through space. The upper portion of this sculpture has been heavily cantilevered in respect to the center of its base which creates a visually exciting design aspect. This spectacular abstract wood sculpture has been created with numerous redwood burls which have been cut and carved with chain saws, shaped with grinders and hand crafted to further enhance the natural forms. After final preparation, the wood designs are assembled with multiple steel rods. The redwood components have been sprayed with a durable clear oil and hand rubbed, producing a matt finish which reveals all the natural colors and exotic grain patterns. Due to the nature of redwood burls, each sculpture is one of a kind and cannot be duplicated. Although it is possible to create similar designs. All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been reclaimed from the underground portions of fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized.

Artists Inspiration:

Born in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Daryl Stokes studied fine arts at the University of South Florida where he specialized in figure drawings, composite drawings and abstract expressionistic paintings. In the early 70's, Stokes began working with redwood driftwood and burls. Stokes was immersed in the ebb and flow of nature’s energy, resulting in his unique, one-of-a-kind natural designs. His past works have included exotic furniture designs, decorative floor fountains and free form abstract sculptures for both residential and commercial use and have been shipped worldwide.
