Striking contemporary redwood sculpture with bold diagonal geometric forms that simulate a standing figure leaning forward while gazing upward with raised arms. The sculpture has been composed with polished angular redwood burls with accents of gnarled driftwood. The dramatic redwood components are richly colorful with a spectacular array of exotic grain patterns and a bright luminescence. In the upper and middle portions of this composition, two gnarled, nearly black root accents create intriguing contrasts and enhance the sculpture's powerful character. This dynamic abstract redwood sculpture has been created with several redwood burls which have been cut and carved with chain saws, shaped with grinders and hand crafted to further enhance the natural forms. After final sanding and other preparations, the wood designs are carefully assembled with numerous steel rods. The redwood components have been sprayed with a durable clear oil and hand rubbed, producing a matt finish which reveals all the natural colors and exotic grain patterns. Due to the nature of redwood burls, each sculpture is one of a kind and cannot be duplicated. Although it is possible to create similar designs. All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been reclaimed from the underground portions of fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized.

Artists Inspiration:

Born in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Daryl Stokes studied fine arts at the University of South Florida where he specialized in figure drawings, composite drawings and abstract expressionistic paintings. In the early 70's, Stokes began working with redwood driftwood and burls. Stokes was immersed in the ebb and flow of nature’s energy, resulting in his unique, one-of-a-kind natural designs. His past works have included exotic furniture designs, decorative floor fountains and free form abstract sculptures for both residential and commercial use and have been shipped worldwide.
