Inspired by M.C. Escher's work in tessellation illustrations, the elephants are drafted in a simple translational symmetry. The artist pieced the blocks, using quilting to give each elephant more structure. Always fascinated by the many ways the people of India ceremoniously dress elephants, the artist embellished my elephants with a wide variety of items including: organic cotton, genuine turquoise, tiger's eye (crocidolite), australian jasper, amethyst, red agate, leopard jasper, unakite, red tourmaline, sodalite, wood, veriscite, moss agate, oyster shell, scallop shell, and freshwater pearls. The artist left four of the elephants undecorated, in a triangular pattern, to better balance the emphasis of the tessellationwith the decoration. The front and borders are raw silk. The batting and backing are organic cotton. Finished with a sewn-in hanging sleeve, to hang on a decorative rod like a tapestry.
